Across simulation, modeling, and advanced analytics, a surprising amount of compute is spent on work that has little impact on the final answer. That waste shows up as longer runtimes, higher power draw, more heat, larger cooling requirements, and higher operating cost. Most approaches try to manage those consequences downstream. HorneSCi focuses upstream on the work itself.
We develop an adaptive compute runtime for sparse and structured workloads. In practice, HorneSCi can replace the sparse kernel you already use, such as a CSR-based SpMV call, with an HST-based call while keeping your models, solvers, and workflows intact.
When computation becomes more selective and less wasteful, the benefits compound across systems. Sometimes that shows up as faster runs, sometimes as lower energy, and often as both.

HST (Hierarchical Sparse Tensor) Runtime is a telemetry-driven adaptive execution substrate for sparse iterative numerical workloads. It instruments runtime behavior and uses feedback control to dynamically reshape data traversal, scheduling, and locality without changing numerical semantics. Exact mode is bit-for-bit equivalent to CSR; budgeted modes trade controlled approximation for efficiency.

HST targets workloads where memory movement dominates cost. Our results will show that it will improve: Runtime Efficiency, Energy Consumption, Carbon Intensity, and Predictability Under Constrained Resources.
